About BoutaBoat

Every boat on this site is listed by the person who actually owns it.

Jimmy Buffett recorded a song called "Somethin' 'Bout a Boat." It's on Songs from St. Somewhere, his 2013 record, and it isn't really a song about boats. It's a song about the short list of things a person actually needs — a boat, a guitar, a dog — and how those few simple things end up carrying more meaning than almost everything else a person owns.

Anybody who has owned a boat understands the sentiment immediately. You don't remember the payment. You remember the morning you got out before anybody else did, the water flat as glass, coffee going cold in the cupholder because you forgot about it.

We named this company after that song because that feeling is the whole reason the boat existed in the first place — and because that feeling is exactly what gets lost the moment you decide to sell.

Selling a boat should be one owner handing something good to the next owner. Instead it turns into listing fees, brokerage contracts, dealer trade-in lowballs, and scrolling past a hundred sectional sofas on Facebook Marketplace hoping a real boat shows up.

So we built the site we wanted to exist. Boats only. Private owners only. Free.

What is BoutaBoat?

BoutaBoat is a free, boats-only online marketplace where private boat owners list their boats for sale directly to buyers, with no dealers, no brokers, no listing fees, and no sales commissions. Buyers browse for free and message owners directly. Sellers keep 100% of what their boat sells for. Every listing on the site comes from an individual selling their own boat — dealers, brokers, and resellers are not permitted to list.

Why private sellers only?

Because the private boat market is enormous, and almost nothing online is actually built for it.

Most boats in this country are not sitting on a dealer lot. They're on a trailer in a side yard, on a lift behind a house, in slip C-14 at the marina down the road. They're owned by a person — someone whose kids outgrew the bowrider, someone moving up from a 21 to a 24, someone who is finally admitting the sailboat hasn't left the dock in three seasons.

When that person decides to sell, their options today are all bad:

  • —A dealer will take it on trade and pay them wholesale.
  • —A broker will list it and take a commission, typically around 10% of the sale price, which on a $60,000 boat is $6,000 of the owner's money.
  • —The big listing sites will let them post it — for an upfront fee, in a search result sandwiched between fifteen dealer listings with professional photography and a marketing budget.
  • —And general classifieds sites will let them post it for free, right next to a used dishwasher, with no field for engine hours, no field for hull material, no field for title status, and no way for a serious buyer to filter for what actually matters on a boat.

BoutaBoat exists to be the one place where the private seller isn't the afterthought. On this site, the private seller is the entire product.

How BoutaBoat is different from Boat Trader, YachtWorld, and Facebook Marketplace

Every boat marketplace makes a tradeoff. Here's ours, next to theirs.

Boat Trader and YachtWorld are good at what they're built for. They're built for the trade. YachtWorld in particular is the brokerage network — the inventory is largely listed by member brokers, and a private owner typically gets on it by signing a listing agreement with one of them and paying a commission at closing. Boat Trader accepts private sellers, but the owner pays upfront to be there and then competes for attention against dealers who list in volume.

Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist have the opposite problem. They're free and they're local, which is genuinely useful — but they're not boat sites. They're everything sites. There is no engine-hours field. There is no title-status field. There's no way to search "center console, 22 to 26 feet, under 500 hours, within 100 miles of me," because the platform has no idea what any of those words mean. Boats are just another category competing with patio furniture.

BoutaBoat is the narrow version on purpose. One category. One kind of seller. Built entirely around the two questions a boat buyer actually asks: what is it, and where is it?

Boats are local, so the search is a map

Nobody buys a boat sight unseen. You go look at it. You put your hand on the hull, you pull the engine cowling, you check the transom, you take it out if the seller will let you. That means the single most important thing about a boat for sale — after what it is — is where it is.

So we made the map a primary way to shop, not a filter buried three clicks deep.

Open Shop the Map and you see boats plotted where they actually sit: the ones on your lake, the ones on the next lake over, the ones two hours down the coast that might be worth the drive for the right hull. Move the map, the results update. You can see the whole private-seller market in your area at a glance, which is something no dealer inventory feed and no general classifieds site will ever show you.

We show approximate location publicly — city and general area — and the exact location gets shared between buyer and seller once a conversation starts. Sellers get privacy. Buyers get geography. Both get what they need.

How we keep dealers off the site

Three ways, and we'd rather be blunt about them than pretend it's magic.

Every person who publishes a listing must check a box attesting, in plain language, that they are the private owner of that boat and not a dealer, broker, or reseller. That attestation is stored on the listing and it's part of our terms.

Every listing has a Report link. If something reads like dealer inventory — stock photography, a fleet of similar hulls, a business phone number, "call for our current inventory" — any signed-in user can flag it in two clicks, and it goes into a review queue.

And we watch listing patterns. An account posting a steady stream of simultaneous listings is behaving like a dealer regardless of what box it checked, and it gets reviewed.

Listings that violate the private-seller policy get removed. That rule is the product. If we don't enforce it, we're just another listing site with worse inventory.

What BoutaBoat does not do

We don't process payments. Money never moves through this site. Buyer and seller work out payment directly, the way private boat sales have always worked — and that means no platform is holding your funds, and also that nobody here can referee a deal that goes sideways. Read our Buying Safely and Selling Safely pages before you meet anyone. Verify the HIN against the title. Get a bill of sale. For anything of real value, get a survey and a sea trial.

We don't take a commission. Not at listing, not at sale, not ever. If your boat sells for $47,500, you got $47,500.

We don't broker, appraise, inspect, finance, or transport. We're an introduction between two people who both want the same boat to change hands.

Who BoutaBoat is for

If you're selling

You own the boat. You'd rather not hand a broker 10% or take a dealer's trade number. You want to price it yourself, describe it honestly, and talk to buyers who already know what a 4.3 MerCruiser is. Listing takes a few minutes and costs nothing.

If you're buying

You want to buy from the person who ran the boat, changed the oil, and knows its actual history — not from a lot. You want to see what's genuinely near you. You want to ask the owner a direct question and get a direct answer.

Who builds BoutaBoat

BoutaBoat is built and operated by a small, independent team of boaters and software engineers who were tired of dealer-saturated marketplaces. We are not backed by a dealership network or a brokerage chain — BoutaBoat is a private company that funds the platform through its parent company rather than by charging sellers a listing fee or a commission. Every feature, listing field, filter, and safety check on the site was designed by people who actually buy, sell, and maintain their own boats. There is no offshore support desk and no sales floor between you and the people who wrote the code. If something is broken, missing, or just feels wrong, email hello@boutaboat.com and you will reach the team directly.

Frequently asked questions

Is BoutaBoat free?

Yes. BoutaBoat is completely free for both buyers and sellers. There are no listing fees, no subscription tiers, no featured-listing upsells, and no commission on a sale. Creating an account is free, listing a boat is free, and messaging a seller is free.

Can dealers or brokers list boats on BoutaBoat?

No. BoutaBoat is exclusively for private sellers — individuals selling a boat they personally own. Dealers, brokers, and resellers are prohibited. Every seller attests to private ownership when publishing, every listing can be reported by any user, and listings that violate the policy are removed.

What's the difference between BoutaBoat and Boat Trader?

Boat Trader lists boats from both dealers and private sellers, and private sellers pay an upfront fee to list. BoutaBoat lists boats from private sellers only, and listing is free. On BoutaBoat you're never competing with, or accidentally buying from, a dealership.

What's the difference between BoutaBoat and YachtWorld?

YachtWorld is primarily a yacht brokerage network — most listings come from member brokers, and a private owner generally lists through a broker and pays a commission at closing, typically around 10%. BoutaBoat has no brokers and no commissions. You list your own boat and keep the entire sale price.

Why not just use Facebook Marketplace to sell my boat?

Facebook Marketplace is a general classifieds platform, not a boat marketplace. It has no boat-specific fields — no engine hours, no hull material, no title status, no trailer status — so serious buyers can't filter for what matters, and your listing competes for attention with furniture and phone cases. BoutaBoat is boats only, with full marine spec fields and a map built for how boat buyers actually search.

How do I find boats for sale by owner near me?

Use Shop the Map. Enter your city or ZIP, or just move the map to the area you're willing to travel to, and you'll see private-seller boats plotted by location. You can filter by boat type, length, year, and price, and the results update as you move the map.

How do I sell my boat by owner on BoutaBoat?

Create a free account, click List Your Boat, choose your boat type, and fill in the details — year, make, model, length, engine, hours, hull material, title status, trailer, condition, photos, and your asking price. You confirm you're the private owner, and the listing goes live. You keep 100% of the sale.

Is my address or phone number shown publicly?

No. Listings display an approximate location — city and general area — never your exact address. Your phone number and email are hidden from public view and only become visible to signed-in users who contact you about your boat.

Does BoutaBoat handle payment or escrow?

No. BoutaBoat does not process payments between buyers and sellers. All payment and transfer is handled directly between the two parties. Review our Buying Safely and Selling Safely guides before completing any transaction.

Where did the name BoutaBoat come from?

It's a nod to "Somethin' 'Bout a Boat," a Jimmy Buffett song from his 2013 album Songs from St. Somewhere, about how a few simple things — a boat among them — end up mattering more than most of what a person owns. BoutaBoat is an independent company and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with Jimmy Buffett, his estate, or Margaritaville Enterprises.
